Pets in the hold

Does your pet exceed the maximum size or weight allowance to travel in the cabin? You can also transport your pet safely in the hold of the airplane. In this site you will find all the necessary information to travel with your pet (dogs or cats) in our holds.

Remember that for international travel, you may need to comply with specific regulations and documentation, so we suggest you contact the embassy or consulate of the destination country to determine pet travel regulations.

Another important matter you have to take notice of, is the kennel, as this item has to follow certain specifications to keep your pet safe.

These are the main conditions to use the service:

  • Be in good health.
  • Be docile.
  • Be at least 8 weeks old, except in the United States where it must be at least 4 months old.
  • Pets can’t be sedated and must meet all travel requirements.

Keep in mind: dogs and cats are the only authorized pets to travel with LATAM in the hold.

Due to the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, we’re taking extra measures to keep you and your pets safe.

Due to load limitations and baggage demand on the route between Santiago (SCL) and Guayaquil (GYE), between Lima (LIM) and Guayaquil (GYE) and between Lima (LIM) and Quito (UIO), the acceptance of animals in the hold on these flights is suspended until further notice.

Effective July 14, 2021, there is a temporary suspension which prohibits the entry of dogs into the United States arriving from high-risk for dog rabies countries listed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), and from countries NOT a high-risk for dogs rabies if the dog has been in a CDC high-risk country during the previous 6 months. The restrictions apply for all dogs (emotional assistance, service dogs, pets, dogs transported in the hold or in the cabin).  It is the passenger's responsibility to check all the details of the restrictions in order to avoid entry denial of a dog upon arrival to the United States.

Travel crate

You have to use a proper container according to your pet´s size, to guarantee their safety and well being. The crate (kennel) must have the following characteristics:

General considerations

We want your pet to be comfortable and safe, thus, the width of the travel crate must be at least two times as wide as your dog or cat; it must be tall enough so your pet can stand up without touching the top; and it must be long enough so your pet can lie down without touching the walls.

In addition, the crate must meet the following requirements:

  • Have only one metal door which must close securely with double locks in both the inferior and superior part of it. The door must ensure that the pet’s snout and paws won’t get stuck in the openings and that the pet won’t be able to open the door.
  • Be made of rigid plastic, wood or metal that’s sturdy enough to resist bending when firm pressure is applied.
  • Have a solid roof with no doors or ventilation openings. The crate must not have openings on top, or have more than one door.
  • Have a water dispenser that allows your pet to drink water during the flight without spilling.
  • Have an absorbent, leak-proof base.
  • Have sufficient ventilation. One end of the crate must have complete ventilation (that can be the door, as long as the security requirements mentioned above are complied) and the other three sides must have ventilation openings. It must also have spacer devices that prevent ventilation openings from becoming blocked by other baggage. The ventilation openings must ensure that the pet won’t be allowed to exit or introduce it’s snout or pows.
  • The crate must not have wheels

We care about everyone's safety and if the crate doesn’t meet those requirements, your pet won’t be accepted on the flight because it will risk its security and wellbeing. Therefore, it’s extremely important that you check the above conditions of your pet’s crate.

Keep in mind: The day of your flight, our airport team will evaluate all the requirements and confirm the service.
