Restricted items

As a health and safety measure and for the security of everybody on board the aircraft, all baggag transported in the hold and in the cabin is inspected by airport staff. If you have any doubts as to what items are permitted to travel with us, we advise you to review the list of exceptions for transporting special items.

What items are prohibited to be taken in the hold and in the cabin of the aircraft?

Animals, plants or their derivatives

With the aim of preventing the introduction of plagues and animal agents carrying diseases, the state institutions restrict the entry of animals, plants, seeds, herbicides and certain foods; these items will not be allowed on board without the proper authorization for importing them and the required health and phytosanitary certification.

Hazardous items

In order to ensure the safety of the flight, the following items are prohibited:

  • Flammable liquids
  • Bleach or paint thinners
  • Explosive materials
  • Poisons
  • Acids
  • Electric skateboards (hoverboards, solo wheels, airwheels, mini-segways, balance wheels) powered by lithium-ion batteries.
  • Cigarette lighters, if traveling to or through the United States.

If for any reason you are taking any of these items on board and you fail to declare them, you are violating the civil aviation regulations.

Do you have any questions about any item in particular? Review the complete list of prohibited items released by the Department of National Security of the United States of America Transportation Security Administration (available in English).

What items are you not permitted to take with you in your carry-on baggage?

Firearms, liquids, gels, aerosols and sharp-edged objects such as: knives, nail files, nail cutters, shavers, tweezers or tools; these items may only be transported in the hold of the aircraft.

Firearms

You may transport firearms provided that they are duly declared and unloaded. Failure to comply with this is an infringement on the civil aviation regulations. We advise you to find out about the local legislation in the country to which you are traveling; for example in Brazil they must be transported in special containers. There are local legal provisions - such as in the case of Brazil - that stipulate firearms must be transported inside special containers.

If your fare includes flights of other airlines you must contact each airline to find out about the conditions and regulations for transporting firearms. Your freight is not permitted on trips in connection with American Airlines due to the restrictions of this company.

Liquids, gels and aerosols permitted in carry-on baggage

Some countries impose restrictions on the liquids you can bring on board the aircraft. You may take aerosols, containers with liquids, gels, liquors, creams or products of similar consistency (deodorant sticks, lipstick, toothpaste) in the cabin inside a transparent bag of up to 1 liter in size, with an opening and closing mechanism that allows the contents to be inspected, provided they do no exceed 100 ml each. Note that it is one bag only permitted per person.

Items that exceed 100 ml may be permitted on board in the following cases:

asked for a medical prescription that certifies your need to use the medication during your trip, taking into account the hours of flight and connections.

  • Food for infants: provided you are traveling with infants.
  • Dietetic foods: which should be for consumption during the flight and the amounts should correspond to the duration of the trip. In this case you may be asked to prove that it is genuinely a dietetic requirement.

Duty Free purchases

On flights that have stopovers, you may only make purchases in the last airport or on board the last fight before arriving at your destination.

  • If you have stopovers in Europe or in the US, you may purchase Duty Free items on any leg of your trip or on board the aircraft. It is important that they give you the purchased items together with their receipt and in a transparent bag, sealed and with its series number. You will need to keep hold of the receipt to show that the item was purchased within a period no longer than 48 hours before your flights.
  • In the US liquids that exceed 100 ml are only permitted to be transported in transparent, translucent or tinted containers. Metallic or opaque containers will only be allowed to be transported in the checked baggage.

Bear in mind that in some countries Duty Free purchases at airports are only permitted if they are delivered to the passenger at the boarding gate of the aircraft.
