Test types
It detects the genetic material of the virus using a laboratory technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Also known as a molecular test, a healthcare professional takes a sample of saliva, nasal fluid or throat with a cotton swab. PCR tests are very accurate when done correctly.
The antibody test, also known as the serological test. A healthcare professional takes a blood sample, usually from a fingertip or a vein in your arm. The sample is then tested to determine if you have developed antibodies to the virus.
This test is unlikely to be necessary to enter any country.
It detects certain proteins in the virus. A cotton swab is used to collect a sample of fluid from the nose or throat, and antigen tests can give results in minutes. A positive antigen test result is considered to be very accurate, but there is a greater chance of a false negative result. Depending on the situation, your doctor may recommend a PCR test to confirm a negative antigen test result.
