The Dakar Rally has taken place on South American soil since 2008, always during the first week of January. In 2018, the race will start in the Ica Desert, Peru, known for its 'black dunes' and continue to the roads surrounding Lake Titicaca, at the Bolivian border.

Beach volleyball started being played in Brazil on the sands of Copacabana in the 1930s. It has become so popular in the country that it has won more Olympic medals in volleyball than any other sport: 13 podiums, three of which were first place.
