From the historic city center to its delightful beaches, discover the essence of the northernmost city in Chile on a pleasant walk

Mercado Colón

Located in the city center, this historic locale is famous for the endless variety of products it offers: seafood, fruits, vegetables and the best juices in the city. One recommendation: the restaurant Caballito de Mar, located at the back, which prepares a delicious/mysterious/rejuvenating potion that combines ceviche sauce with shellfish, lime, egg and pepper. The name of the invention is Copa Martínez – be sure to try it.

Catedral de San Marcos

A few blocks from the market, this neo-Gothic building is one of the most beautiful in Arica. Asymmetrical and simple, it was designed by French architect Gustav Eiffel. With the exception of the front doors, it was entirely built out of metal sheets. Inside, the highlights are an old statue of Christ from the 12th century and the original campanile.

El Morro

This huge and rocky hill, located by the ocean, is 426 feet [130 m] tall and offers the best view of the city and the Pacific. At the top you’ll find an overlook, the Museo Histórico y de Armas, and the Cristo de la Concordia, a monument that symbolizes peace. Even though it may seem like a cliché, watching the sunset there is truly worth it.

Restaurant Maracuyá

Located on the rocks, practically where the waves break, this restaurant is a classic place to try seafood typical of the region. The roasted octopus with lime and pisco sours made with tropical fruits are the highlights on the menu.

Beaches El Laucho and La Lisera

In this city where the sun shines all year round, with an extensive coast that is home to one of the events of the World Surf League (August), you’d expect to find good beaches. El Laucho is quite popular: few waves, clear sands, perfect for playing volleyball, going bodyboarding or spending the afternoon on the shade. Meanwhile, La Lisera, located to the south, is quieter, with a family atmosphere. Its palm trees make it one of the most photogenic beaches in Arica.
