8 things you should know before arriving at the El Prat Airport in Barcelona
Ample, well lit and easy to navigate, Spain’s second busiest airport (after Barajas in Madrid) has won the Skytrax Award, the Oscar of aviation, more than once.
Two terminals (Terminal 1 concentrates 70% of the flights) are connected by the free Bus Transit service, which also stops at the parking lot. It runs 24 hours a day every 20 minutes.
El Prat Airport is located some 9 miles [15 km] southwest of downtown Barcelona. By car, this distance can be covered in 25 to 40 minutes (depending on the traffic).
Subway: the L9 sud subway line, which services terminals 1 and 2, is connected to three other urban lines.
Train: access through Terminal 2. For people traveling from Terminal 1, the Bus Transit runs to this station.
Bus: the best option is the Aerobús, which stops at both terminals. It takes around 35 minutes to go from the airport to Plaça de Catalunya and it stops at such places as Plaça Espanya, Gran Via-Urgell and Plaça Universitat.
Traveling with kids
The airport has 10 recreation areas and offers special strollers for the little ones. In the security control area, there’s a special scanner for families with these carriages.
When it comes to food, the crown jewel of El Prat is the Porta Gaig, founded by Catalan cuisine master Carles Gaig. In a peaceful corner of Terminal 1, you can try traditional dishes and snacks, which are ideal for before your flight.
Relaxation + view
Hotel Porta Fira is located 4.5 miles [7 km] from El Prat. It’s installed in a 360-foot [110 m] tall tower designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito. Comfortable and stylish in every detail.
There’s no lack of places to buy souvenirs there, like Botiga del Barça, with its official Fútbol Club Barcelona jerseys, pennants, socks and balls. Most of the stores are located after the security zone, and almost all are open from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Kubi Wireless offers free internet connection via Wi-Fi for 30 minutes. The company also has paid services that you can buy online using your credit card or at the stores that sell pre-paid cards.
