And one that is going to host them this year!
For the first time, Peru is welcoming the Pan American and Parapan American Games. The capital Lima is going to host the sports events from July 26 to August 11 and from August 23 to September 1, with LATAM as the Official Airline. There will be 39 sports, including surfing and skateboarding.
Mexico City had already hosted the Pan American Games twice, but it was time for Guadalajara to show how to organize a great party. And they are experts in excitement: the region is the birthplace of tequila and mariachis. With crowded venues, the Games had a record-breaking audience.
The Pan American Games in Rio paved the way for other important events in the Marvelous City, the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. At the 15th edition of the competition, the United States finished in first place, while Brazil came in 3rd, with 157 medals.
Anyone who attended this edition of the Games was also able to explore one of the oldest cities in the Americas. Santo Domingo was founded in 1496, just four years after Christopher Columbus arrived in the continent. The Dominican Republic finished in 9th place among the 44 participants.
Fred Flintstone would have loved to participate in the 11th edition of the Pan American Games, held in the Cuban capital. That year, bowling made its debut in the event, and Cuba put on a show for the audience. The country defeated the United States, the greatest medal winner at the Games so far.
When Cali hosted the sixth edition of the Pan American Games, it had just over 900,000 inhabitants. Colombia finished in seventh place, and the event marked the city, which inaugurated many of its sports complexes – some still host important competitions, like the World Salsa Championship.
The idea to have a competition between the countries in the Americas came about in the mid-1930s, but the first edition of the Pan American Games took place almost 20 years later – they were held in Buenos Aires, where locals celebrated Argentina achieving first place in the medal table.
