Chapada Diamantina, the treasure of Bahia: the wonderful pictures taken by Araquém Alcântara
Photographer Araquém Alcântara registers his impressions of some of the most beautiful landscapes in Brazil, in Chapada Diamantina
When to go
It rains less from April to October, and the trails are dry. It’s also the right period to watch the sun’s rays invading Poço Azul and Poço Encantado.
How to get there
Lençóis is located some 265 miles [426 km] from the state capital, Salvador. It takes a five-hour drive or a six-hour bus trip to get there, crossing semi-arid landscapes in Bahia.
In the north portion of the Park, Lençóis is the largest city, with the best infrastructure. In the central region there are good accommodation options in the village of Igatu, and, in the south, Mucugê welcomes visitors.
LATAM has direct flights to Salvador from: São Paulo, Brasília, Rio de Janeiro and other 2 destinations.
A ray of sunshine illuminates Poço Azul for an hour and a half from February to October, making the color of the water even more intense.
A narrow canyon leads to Cachoeira do Buracão. The more adventurous can swim against the current to get there, or you can take a scaffold and walk between the rocks.
You can go snorkeling at Gruta da Pratinha, which gets completely dark at the cavern with clear waters.
Begonias decorate the landscape in Chapada Diamantina.

Late afternoon at the entrance to Gruta da Lapinha, an immense cavern with stalactites in Vale do Pati, which can be explored on hikes that last up to four days.
Zip-lining and snorkeling are the main activities at Gruta da Pratinha, in addition to a small beach where you can go swimming.
The trail to Cachoeira do Buracão (level of difficulty: easy) passes by other cascades before reaching the main attraction, a 280-foot [85 m] tall waterfall inside a rock canyon that forms a lake.
A postcard sight in Chapada Diamantina, Morro do Pai Inácio is easily accessed. From the top, you can see the slopes of other mountains on the horizon. This geological formation is 1.6 billion years old and was once the bottom of the ocean.
