Montserrat
Spain

At Plaça d'Espanya in Barcelona, take the FGC Llobregat-Anoia line and get off at the Monistrol de Montserrat station. There you’ll find an abbey of Benedictine monks built in 1409 and dedicated to Our Lady of Montserrat, the patron saint of Catalonia. The sanctuary is nested on a hill of the Montserrat massif, a mountain with a unique aspect thanks to its “rock needles.” Currently, 80 monks live in the monastery.

Petrópolis
Brazil

Buses to Petrópolis run every 40 minutes from the Novo Rio Bus Terminal in Rio de Janeiro. The ride takes a little over an hour to the Imperial City, chosen as the second home to Portuguese emperors in the colonial period. The lovely gardens at Museu Imperial, formerly the summer palace for Dom Pedro II, are a can’t-miss attraction, just like the Palácio de Cristal, a charming structure built for Princess Isabel to grow flowers and plants.

Colônia do Sacramento
Uruguay

Two hours and a half separate the capital Montevideo from this colonial enclave. As you walk around its well-preserved city center, you’ll be able to enjoy the perfect combination of Portuguese and Spanish architecture. Make sure to explore Calle de los Suspiros to check out the houses that haven’t changed since 1680, the year the city was founded. These days, they are often used as a location for period movies. If you still have the energy, take on the 118 steps of the Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse to enjoy the most privileged view of the city.
