The third most populous city in Brazil was founded on April 21, 1960, when it was also elevated to the status of national capital and home to the country’s three powers. Its urban planning, designed by Lúcio Costa, architect Oscar Niemeyer, and engineer Joaquim Cardozo, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and resembles the shape of a plane. Notable structures include the Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida, the Palácio do Planalto (home to the main working office of the President of the Republic), and the Museu Nacional Honestino Guimarães.
