Known as the Cocoa Capital, Ilhéus was once the world's first producer of this fruit. This period of bonanza contributed to the development of the city and was expressed in its luxurious architecture. Currently, there are many chocolate factories of excellent quality and in many varieties. Some tourists come looking for this delight, some others to see the sites described in the novels of writer Jorge Amado or just to enjoy the 160 kilometers of white sand beaches. Located between the ocean and the Atlantic jungle at the south of the state of Bahia, Ilheús has an average temperature of 77 °F, interesting historical monuments and a rich traditional gastronomy.
