Enchanting Natal:

a photo essay on the capital of Rio Grande do Norte

The nature, history, and 300 sunny days a year that brighten the capital of Rio Grande do Norte

It’s a happy coincidence that, in a city founded on Christmas Day, in the middle of the Brazilian summer, the sun is (almost) always shining: Natal has 300 clear-sky days a year. With this weather, it’s easy to take advantage of the other gifts that Rio Grande do Norte offers: a rich history, with Portuguese, Dutch, and indigenous heritage; colonial structures filled with relics; and paradisiacal beaches where the heat never ends.

Praia de Ponta Negra, a beach that used to be a summer destination, was incorporated into the city in the 1990s.

Paradise and history: above, the Forte dos Reis Magos, built in the 16th century to protect the territory from French corsairs, is surrounded by the blue waters of Praia do Forte. On the next page, view of the beach.

Nightfall on the Potengi River, the “big river” for which the state is named. It’s when the Newton Navarro Bridge is lit up, for one of the only periods the sun is not shining in the city: at night

Natal

Getting there

The airport is around 16 miles [26 km] from the central region, and the distance can be covered by bus. It takes approximately an hour to get to the city center, where you will find other bus lines.

When to go

The maximum temperatures exceed 86 °F [30 °C] most of the year. Even though it doesn’t rain a lot, cloudy days are more common between April and June.
