The Colombian coffee-growing axis (known as the Eje Cafetero in Spanish), located in the northeast of the country, is comprised of three departments: Caldas, Quindío and Risaralda. Pereira, the capital of Risaralda and the largest urban center in the region, is a comfortable base for exploring the birthplace of the famed Colombian coffee. Coffee-themed tourism gained momentum in the 1990s with the opening of the National Coffee Park. In recent years, coffee plantations have also opened their grounds to visitors, and many also have charming hotels.
